l.~rio, P.L., Jr., 1986. Growth--different iat ion balance: a basis for understanding southern pine beetle--~ree interactions. For. Ecol. Manage., 14:259-273 . Interrelationships between the southern pine beetle (SPB), Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.) and its host pines are explained in terms of the growth--differentiat ion balance concept. A general hypothesis is proposed based on growth--differentiat ion balance in southern pines (radial growth of stems versus synthesis and yield o f oleoreain) and seasonal activity of the SPB based on knowledge from experimentat ion and observations reported in the literature. The spring appears to be particularly favorable for successful SPB attack because of the strong demand for available photosynthates by growth proceases at that time, whereas, in the summer, strong resin flow increases the potential resistance of trees to attack. Growth--differentiat ion balance provides a basis for understanding SPB-tree interactions, a rationale for commonly experienced problems in identifying consistent precursors to SPB outbreaks, and a philosophical basis for future research. The concept has potential application to other bark beetle--host conifer relationships.

Competitive, interactions among bark beetle associated fungi are potentially influenced by abiotic factors. Water potential, in particular, undergoes marked changes over the course of beetle colonization of tree hosts. متن کاملSilvicultural Considerations in Managing Southern Pine Stands in the Context of Southern Pine Beetle
Roughly 30 percent of the 200 million acres of forest land in the South supports stands dominated by southern pines. These are among the most productive forests in the nation. Adapted to disturbance, southern pines are relatively easy to manage with even-aged methods such as clearcutting and planting, or the seed tree and shelterwood methods with natural regeneration. In addition, most species ...
متن کاملIncreased resin flow in mature pine trees growing under elevated CO2 and moderate soil fertility.
Warmer climates induced by elevated atmospheric CO(2) (eCO(2)) are expected to increase damaging bark beetle activity in pine forests, yet the effect of eCO(2) on resin production--the tree's primary defense against beetle attack--remains largely unknown. Following growth-differentiation balance theory, if extra carbohydrates produced under eCO(2) are not consumed by respiration or growth, resi...
متن کاملHigh-resolution analysis of stem increment and sap flow for loblolly pine trees attacked by southern pine beetle
------bitract: Minual and automated dendrometers, and thermal dissip and sap flow for loblolly pine (Pirzus taeda L.) trees attacked by southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frorztalis Zirnm.) in east Tennessee, USA. Seasonal-long measurements with manual dendrometers indicated linear increases in stem circumference from April through June. Changes in stem circumference slowed after this time, and...

We evaluated the efficacy of systemic insecticides emamectin benzoate and fipronil for preventing mortality of individual loblolly pines, Pinus taeda L., as a result of attacks by southern pine bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) for two consecutive years in Mississippi (2005-2006) and Alabama (2006-2007). Trees were injected once in the spring of 2005 (Mississippi) or 2006 (Al...
